Long Beach Traumatic Brain Injury Lawyer

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury of the brain that is typically caused by some sort of an impact to the head. This can range anywhere from a soccer ball to the forehead during a championship game to a head-on collision in a car accident. What might begin as a simple bump on the head could turn into something with serious long-term consequences.

Traumatic brain injury can arise anytime, anywhere ocan arise anytime, anywhere

A traumatic brain injury will usually be the result of an impact to the head. This means that it can arise from any contact your head has with another object. If you are rear-ended and your head strikes the windshield, you could end up suffering from more than a small bruise along your hairline.

Brain injuries are not always readily apparent. Unlike a broken bone, it is not always visibly obvious that something bad has happened to your brain. Sometimes, a traumatic brain injury is obvious from the start because you may not be able to speak very well. More commonly, however, there may be very minimal to no symptoms. A concussion can often lead to a more serious brain injury. When you have a concussion, you might feel sleepy and be more inclined to take a nap after you have received a blow to the head. It’s important that you remain conscious, as allowing yourself to sleep could lead to more serious long-term consequences.

Symptoms of a Traumatic Brain Injury Can Be Easily Missed

To be frank, the symptoms of a traumatic brain injury are not the easiest in the world to identify. A traumatic brain injury can be mild, moderate, or severe.

Symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury can include (but are not limited to):

  • Excessive fatigue
  • Depression
  • Difficulty forming thoughts or sentences
  • Memory loss
  • Coordination/balance problems
  • Nausea

Symptoms of a moderate brain injury can include, but are not limited to:

  • Depression
  • Dilated pupils in one or both eyes
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Difficulty walking
  • General confusion
  • Irritability
  • Combative (aggressive) behavior
  • Clear fluid draining from the nose and/or ears
  • Regular nausea and/or vomiting

Symptoms of a severe brain injury include, but are not limited to:

  • Clear fluid draining from the nose and/or ears
  • Inability or difficulty speaking
  • Inability or difficulty walking
  • Confusion
  • Dilated pupils in one or both eyes

It should be noted that more often than not, symptoms of a moderate and severe brain injury may be very similar. If you have recently received some sort of an injury to your head (a blow, extensive shaking, or an object piercing your skull), you should contact a doctor immediately. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms after a head injury, you may be suffering from some form of a TBI and should reach out to your doctor as soon as possible. Do not wait – TBI can progress and become more severe as time passes.

How can TBI be treated?

How a traumatic brain injury is treated can vary based on a long list of factors, including the general severity of the injury. A mild TBI, for example, may not require anywhere near as much rehabilitation in order for a sufferer to function normally than a severe TBI.

Common treatments for a traumatic brain injury can include, but certainly are not limited to:

  • Medication
  • Intensive care
  • Rehabilitation
  • Therapy (mental and/or physical)
  • Surgery

If you have suffered from a traumatic brain injury, your treatment may vary. Your doctor will always be the best judge of what treatment you should receive.

Often wrongful blame is placed on the rider in a multi-vehicle collision due to the increased risk that comes with riding a motorcycle. Insurance companies are reluctant to side with the motorcyclist and oftentimes will attempt to place the full or partial blame on them. Don’t accept that blame and the legal repercussions that come with it.
