70-year-old woman struck and killed by Berkeley city vehicle

According to CBS Local, Shelley Rideout was identified as the 70-year-old woman who died in a car collision with a Berkeley city vehicle on Friday afternoon at the intersection of Channing Way and Fulton Street near the campus of UC Berkeley.

As mentioned in the article, the collision took place at 1:21 p.m. at the intersection at Channing Way and Fulton Street near the University of California at Berkeley campus.

California Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the crash and authorities pronounced the 70-year-old woman dead at the scene.  She was later identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau as Shelley Rideout, reported the article.

According to CHP Officer Matthew Hamer, investigators alleged that a city employee was driving a sedan at the university intersection when they struck Rideout in the middle of a crosswalk.

Moreover, the driver of the vehicle reportedly traveled at about 15 miles per hour before hitting the victim.  After the initial impact, the driver, who remained anonymous in the news report, stayed behind and was cooperative with investigators in their questioning, said officials.

Hamer also stated that neither drugs nor alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Currently, this crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the exact cause and liable party in the crash.

Further details will be reported at a later time once the investigation has concluded.
