Off-duty Modesto Police Sergeant killed by DUI-related collision

According to a recent article from CBS Local Sacramento, there was a deadly collision on Tuesday which killed an off-duty sergeant named Michael Pershall along Merle Avenue near Savage Middle School.

As mentioned in the article, the accident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. last Tuesday when Pershall was riding his bicycle along Merle Avenue near Savage Middle School.

Reporters indicated that the 38-year-old sergeant was struck from behind by a suspected DUI driver.  Later investigators reported that the driver of the vehicle was identified as 32-year-old Matthew Gibbs, who remained on scene after the crash.

Authorities arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, the article mentioned.

Currently, this crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the exact cause and liable party in the crash.
