32-Year-Old Officer Involved in Car Wreck After Responding to Separate Traffic Collision

According to a recent ABC7.com article, there was a major car accident in which a police officer was critically injured on Tuesday morning.

Per the news report, the initial crash took place in the 2200 block of N. Garey Avenue, where officers were responding to a fatal situation where a pedestrian was struck by a hit-and-run driver. The pedestrian suffered major injuries while the driver fled, although the driver eventually returned to the scene and turned himself in.

The decedent was described by officials as Charles Washington, a 60-year-old transient man.

Reports from the Pomona Police Department indicate that the motorcycle officer was heading toward the scene of this fatal crash before he himself was involved in another separate collision, just eight blocks north of the first crash.

A Ford Explorer attempted to turn left into on-coming traffic where he struck the motorcycle officer, authorities reported. As a result, the two vehicles collided and left the 32-year-old police officer critically injured. The officer was transported to LAC+USC Medical Center for treatment after he was determined to be suffering a major head injury. The driver of the Ford Explorer was taken to Pomona Police Department headquarters to further develop the investigation into the crash.

Police sources have since then reported that the driver in question was cooperating fully. The authorities continue to investigate the two crashes to determine what exactly happened in these two subsequent crashes.

Further information will reported as it is determined in the investigation of the accident by the California Highway Patrol and the Pomona Police Department.

Our office wishes to extend our condolences to the people who were involved in these two crashes and hope that the police officer makes a speedy recovery.
