Driver dead after crashing into multiple vehicles in freeway crash

Luis Gutierrez Rodriguez died after causing a wrong-way car accident that cause multiple injuries on Interstate 880 at Highway 237 in Milpitas early Tuesday morning, said the Mercury News.

The accident happened just before 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, said the article.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to a report about a wrong-way driver involved in a multiple vehicle car accident, said the news article.

A green Ford van crashed into the center divide, sustaining front-end damage.  Authorities were able to identify the driver as Luis Gutierrez Rodriguez, a 52-year-old Oakland resident.  Rodriguez had crashed into the side of a Buick that was caught in the path of the driver.

Moreover, Rodriguez then crashed head-on into a Toyota pickup truck, the news reported.

As a result, the Ford spun out and crashed into a Mercedes-Benz as well as a Honda Civic.  California Highway Patrol stated that the drivers of the Toyota and the Mercedes-Benz sustained minor injuries.

Rodriguez, however, was killed and pronounced dead by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Currently, this incident is under review in an ongoing investigation by the authorities, and further details will be reviewed and released to the public as it is determined.
