Los Padres National Forest Fire Battalion Chief is killed in a car accident while returning home

According to an article from KEYT.com, there was a person who was killed in a deadly car accident that took place on Highway 41 and Highway 33 in King’s County.

The article reported that the accident occurred just before 8:30 a.m. when 25-year-old driver Antonio Avalos, a resident of Santa Maria, swerved due to a flat tire, and into the path of Gary Helming, 47 in his 2014 Ford.

As a result, Avalos suffered major injuries and had to be airlifted by paramedics to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.  Later reports indicated that Avalos is in fair condition on Friday.

Additionally, California Highway Patrol responded and declared the victim, Helming, dead at the scene.  Reports stated that he was returning home from a fire assignment on the Railroad Fire in the Sierra National Forest before he was caught in the deadly accident.

Currently, this crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the exact cause and liable party in the crash.
