Tanker truck overturns, leaking fuel on road before causing giant explosion
According to a KTLA press article, on May 23, 2017, there was a giant explosion that occurred after a tanker truck carrying 9,000 gallons of gasoline crashed on Highway 99 near Applegate Road.
200 local residents were evacuated, according to reports, after a tanker truck overturned and exploded on Tuesday morning. Carrying 9,000 gallons of gasoline to a nearby gas station, the tanker suddenly crashed around 10:00 a.m.
According to the investigators, the truck is believed to have been going too fast exiting the highway when it hit a concrete divider and overturned; the fuel then started leaking and caught on fire soon after, said the California Highway Patrol.
As a result, the truck was completely incinerated in the fire. Officials stated that the black smoke coming from the explosion could be seen 5 to 8 miles away. Furthermore, about 200 residents in the area were evacuated from their homes and locations as a result.
At this time, authorities have not yet been able to identify the truck driver who perished along with his vehicle. Further details will be reported at a later time once the investigation is concluded.
At this time, we would like to wish for peace and comfort for everyone affected by this explosive accident. We hope that the investigation is thorough and presents some sort of closure for this entire ordeal.
