The American Automobile Association in conjunction with Seventeen magazine, performed a survey of American teenagers regarding text messaging and driving. According to the study, almost nine (9) in ten (10) teenage drivers (86%) have driven while distracted, even though 84% say they know they shouldn’t.
Text messaging while driving is dangerous for all drivers, especially teenagers, for multiple reasons:
Texting while driving demands physical control of the phone and takes your eyes from the road;
Mentally the driver is focused on the composition of the text message and reading the text messages received;
Teenagers are inexperienced drivers, so additional distraction increases the risk of an auto accident considerably.
Texting while driving accidents are very common. Further, texting and driving is very dangerous and causes car accidents, which lead to serious injuries and even death. Speak to your teenage children about the dangers of text messaging while driving. Indeed, take your own advice and put the cell phone down while operating a car.
