Deadly car accident on Highway 166 when a 31-year-old Santa Maria man died following a two-vehicle collision Saturday morning on Highway 166 about 60 miles east of Santa Maria. The 8 a.m. head-on collision involved a Cadillac sedan driven by a Santa Maria man and a Dodge pickup driven by a 44-year-old Cuyama man on Highway 166 near Kirschenmann Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said the Santa Maria man was eastbound on Highway 166 when he tried to pass another vehicle and slammed head on into the westbound pickup. The sedan’s driver died from his injuries and the pickup’s driver was taken by air ambulance to Kern County Medical Center for treatment of minor to moderate injuries. The drivers’ names were not released. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision, the CHP said. The section of Highway 166 was closed for a short time because emergency equipment blocked the roadway but reopened the highway about 10:40 a.m., CHP officials said. Santa Maria Times
